THE HOMOPHILE IN THE COMMUNITY

(Continued from page 9)

The following are random notes by this reporter on points of interest in Doctor Hooker's talk:

Problems met in research on the topic -1Racial minority groups versus deviant minority groups. The kind of stigma attached in somehow seen as a tribal stigma as opposed to a concept of "moral decay" in the case of sexually deviant groups. 2Operative vs. conceived values. Those values one apparently lives by as opposed to the values one says ho lives by. 3Essential agreement between heterosexual and homosexual values in all phases of life except that of sexual mores. On the first problem society sees homosexuality as either "immorality", which means it should bo punished, or as an "illness", which means that it is subJect to cure.

The conflict and the congruence The sub-group of homosexuals and heterosexuals tested was white, Protestant and bourgeoisie. The only real conflict found was in the sexual area. Values relating to masulinity, esthetics, politics and religion were not found to be significantly different for the two groups. There was also found among the homosexual group a great value placed on youth. The "auntie" is held in fear, contempt and pity. There is,

however, also a great value placed on youth by heterosexual society.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS

Three discussion groups were held concurrently, then the group leaders gathered with Doctor Hooker and W. Dorr Legg to summarize the findings.

Discussion groups were:

A.

Regulated Homophile Mating--Key to Social Approval? The group opinion appeared to be that no legal status should be set up by church or law, nor was it felt that social approval would be obtained even if this were attempted.
